United Way Announces Campaign Award Winners Sweepstakes winners get free gas, free groceries and free rent for a year

March 11, 2010

United Way on March 10 recognized companies who ran outstanding fundraising campaigns to benefit kids and families in Snohomish County through United Way’s Local Community Fund.

Three lucky donors, Suyteang Lee of Korry Electronics, Hope Willson of Snohomish County and Carol Johnson of Comcast also won a year’s worth of gas, groceries and rent, respectively, as winners of the United Way “Taking Care of Basics” Sweepstakes. Sweepstakes prizes were $50 per week for gas for one year, $100 per week for groceries for one year, and up to $1000 per month toward rent or a mortgage payment for one year.  Sponsored by Frontier Bank and United Parcel Service (UPS), the Sweepstakes raised over $260,000 in new donations in 2009 to United Way.

Despite a challenging economy and unemployment of over 10%, fall United Way campaigns hit their goal of $3.2 million and raised slightly more than last year, said Carl Zapora, president and CEO for United Way of Snohomish County.  Zapora added that fall campaigns are only one component of total giving to United Way.  The total raised will be announced in June.

“The needs in the community are larger than in we’ve seen in most years.  It was no time to be bashful.  Companies and their employees really stepped forward and responded,” said Matt Reinhard, 2009 Campaign Chair. “We are grateful for every donor and every volunteer who is improving lives, one dollar and one hour at a time.”

Nearly 16,000 people invest millions of dollars in our community’s future each year through their donations to United Way, making Snohomish County stronger, more vibrant and a better place to live,” Reinhard added.

Because United Way’s primary mission is local, the focus is on raising money for United Way’s Local Community Fund, which supports 88 nonprofit programs in the county and United Way initiatives in early learning, financial stability, the Volunteer Center and the 211 helpline.

“In times when every dollar counts, people appreciate knowing that United Way invests Local Community Fund dollars in programs that are doing the most good, and then carefully monitors the results,” Reinhard said.
