  • Thank you for your support of United Way. This newsletter provides the latest information about how United Way and our partners are making a difference in the lives of kids, families and communities in Snohomish County.

Thanks to you, United Way is changing the way. From quick fixes to real, lasting change. That's what matters.™

    Volunteer Expo bigger than ever!

The Volunteer Expo attracted 72 nonprofit agencies and hundreds of people "shopping" for volunteer opportunities at their booths at the Everett Mall this year. Thanks to sponsors The Everett Mall, Borders, and The Herald.

From left, Maya and Jayla, 10-year-old twins, search United Way's web site for a volunteer opportunity with Lynn Nixon while their mom, Sheryl, looks on.

"We had a great turn out at our booth. We tracked 177 individuals that we actually spoke to (and who didn't just stop by to get candy!). I was very pleased with this year's event."
    —Nancy Patton, Sno-Isle Libraries

Encouraging a spirit of volunteerism all year long is one of United Way's goals. Last year, 1694 volunteers gave 24,424 hours of time through United Way sponsored projects and events. At the national rate of the value of a "volunteer hour," that was worth $440,609 to our community.

    United Way has moved!

Thanks to all who have visited our new offices, and especially to those who
helped make the new United Way Community Center a reality. This is the first time in its 66-year history that
United Way has owned its own building.

    Nominate Someone with Spirit

We are looking for people whose service embodies the spirit of our community. Each year, United Way recognizes exemplary individuals with the prestigious Spirit of Snohomish County Award.

Do you know an adult or youth who is actively volunteering and inspiring others to serve? Winners will be honored at United Way's Spirit of Snohomish County breakfast on September 12. Nomination forms can be obtained at www.uwsc.org or by calling Laura Walker at 425.374.5518.

    Early Learning Today, Workforce Tomorrow

What if you could get $11 back for every $1 invested? That's the rate of return county officials estimate is the pay off in higher graduation rates and workforce productivity, fewer teen pregnancies, and reduced crime for every $1 invested in early childhood.

The Snohomish County Children's Commission and United Way are inviting the business community to learn more about the positive ROI when children are healthy and ready for success in school and life.

"The Return on Investment When Kids Thrive"
Bob Watt, Vice President of Government Relations and Global Corporate Citizenship at The Boeing Company, will offer his unique perspective on the economic and societal benefits when children thrive and why it is important for the business community to become involved.

    June 13 from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.
