individuals that we actually spoke to (and who didn't
just stop by to get candy!). I was very pleased with this
year's event." Encouraging a spirit of volunteerism all year long is one of United Way's goals. Last year, 1694 volunteers gave 24,424 hours of time through United Way sponsored projects and events. At the national rate of the value of a "volunteer hour," that was worth $440,609 to our community.

We are looking for people whose service embodies the spirit of our community. Each year, United Way recognizes exemplary individuals with the prestigious Spirit of Snohomish County Award. Do you know an adult or youth who is actively volunteering and inspiring others to serve? Winners will be honored at United Way's Spirit of Snohomish County breakfast on September 12. Nomination forms can be obtained at www.uwsc.org or by calling Laura Walker at 425.374.5518. Left: hand blown glass Spirit of Snohomish County award by Bill Sargent of Bellingham.
What if you could get $11 back for every $1 invested? That's the rate of return county officials estimate is the pay off in higher graduation rates and workforce productivity, fewer teen pregnancies, and reduced crime for every $1 invested in early childhood. The Snohomish County Children's Commission and United Way are inviting the business community to learn more about the positive ROI when children are healthy and ready for success in school and life.
