United Way of Snohomish County: Youth Developmental Assets

Visit the blog for the latest information or view our calendar for upcoming events.

Overview

The Marysville Kids Matter Initiative promotes optimal development for all children.

Each individual can have an impact in the relationship between caring adults, safe places, positive activities and the healthy development of all children. Marysville Kids Matter is helping break down barriers and increasing connections within the community.

Initiative Strategy and Partnership

Instead of focusing on reducing risks and problems through traditional intervention programs, we believe a community-wide commitment to youth will promote the healthy development of all children. Based on the Search Institute’s asset-building framework, this initiative “seeks to motivate individuals, organizations and leaders to join together in caring for all children in their community.”

The Marysville Community Coalition and United Way of Snohomish County are leading this effort to bring long-term, sustainable change to the Marysville community. Both organizations share responsibility and accountability for success.

Goals and Action Plan

We are working to determine how personal networks, neighborhoods and organizations in our community could better support youth. We track results to determine or not our targeted efforts for community change are working to improve lives. We are committed to creating an environment where:

  • Youth feel more valued by the community
  • Adults exhibit positive behaviors more frequently
  • Adults are more frequently available for children after school
  • The community is less tolerant of adults who exhibit negative behaviors
  • Community members believe that everyone is responsible for all of the children in the community
  • Community members care more about kids

So far, we have:

  • Identified target populations
  • Identified community groups to work with
  • Identified potential partnership with Marysville Healthy Communities
  • Conducted focus groups
  • Researched other community asset models such as Kitsap County's
  • Sent our trainers to Search Institute trainings

Where We Are Today

Current Status
  • We are launching a pilot plan at Marysville Middle School that integrates Developmental Assets into an existing health curriculum and trains staff to be intentional asset-builders.
  • We developed a sustainability structure to support the greater Marysville community through trainings, community events and media.
  • We're engaging with the county-wide Developmental Assets movement in Snohomish County.
