Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Position Descriptions

United Way of Snohomish County: Free Tax Preparation Volunteers

All roles take place at multiple locations throughout Snohomish County.
 

TAX SITE ADMINISTRATOR

This particular role is the face of the tax site! In this role, you will support the site's flow and ensure that all clients experience a high level of customer service. Screen clients to certify they are eligible for free tax prep, in-person appointments, and coordinate clients who would like to drop off their paperwork. Other duties include managing inventory of site materials and additional administrative duties, as needed, by the tax site manager. This volunteer will need to be comfortable with handling large groups of people, and able to handle high-pressure situations.

  • Will need to pass the Advanced IRS test (open book exam at the training provided by United Way) and attend site orientation in January (details TBD).

IN-PERSON QUALITY REVIEWER

Are you an experienced volunteer with a high-attention to detail? In-Person Quality Reviewer volunteers review prepared tax returns for accuracy, and are stationed at the client-facing tax site locations. This is a great opportunity to practice your customer service skills and work with clients from the community! These volunteers also help clients that are using our tax preparation drop-off service and review completed returns with clients when they return for pick-up. Quality Reviewers ensure the client understands their tax situation, and supports both the in-person tax preparers and drop-off coordinators with complex tax law questions.

  • Will need to pass the Advanced IRS test (open book exam at the training provided by United Way) and attend site orientation in January (details TBD).

NON-CLIENT-FACING QUALITY REVIEWER

Are you an experienced volunteer with a high-attention to detail? Quality Reviewer volunteers review prepared returns for accuracy, and are stationed at the Preparation Center. Please note: This role is NOT in front of clients. Off-Site Quality Reviewers support the off-site tax preparers who prepare dropped-off tax returns from the tax sites. Quality Reviewers also assist the site manager with complex tax situations, making sure all tax returns are ready to be signed and picked-up by the client within the given timeframe. 

  • Will need to pass the Advanced IRS test (open book exam at the training provided by United Way) and attend site orientation in January (details TBD).

DROP-OFF COORDINATOR

Drop-Off Coordinators will conduct tax preparation using the "drop-off model"interviewing clients and getting their tax documents in order to copy and send off-site for preparation. This process typically takes about ten to fifteen minutes per client, and is designed to be a faster process for the client, reducing wait times and providing increased capacity for free tax prep. The Drop-Off Coordinator also meets with clients that are picking up their tax returns, walking them through their completed return to ensure the client understands their tax situation. Drop-Off Coordinators will support Tax Site Administrators with the initial screening process, and help clients gather the correct documents needed for efficient site flow.

IN-PERSON TAX PREPARER

These volunteers prepare tax returns for households with low-income at our tax site locations. In-person tax preparers will sit with clients and prepare tax returns with the oversight and support of volunteer Quality Reviewers and Site Managers. You will use computer software specifically designed to prepare taxes, and walk through the process with clients. When you are finished preparing the return, a quality reviewer will look over the forms for accuracy and present the documents to the taxpayer. 

  • Will need to be IRS-certified and pass the Advanced IRS test (open book exam at the training provided by United Way) and attend site orientation in January (details TBD).
  • No experience necessary! This is a great way to jump into the tax program and help return more money to the pockets of taxpayers with low income.

NON-CLIENT-FACING TAX PREPARER

These volunteers prepare tax returns for households with low-income who have dropped-off their tax documents at a tax site to be prepared. Off-site tax preparers will receive documents that were dropped off by taxpayers and prepare tax returns remotely, sending the completed returns back to the site to be picked up by the taxpayer at a later date. These volunteers will be supported by volunteer Quality Reviewers and a Site Manager. Please note: This role is NOT in front of clients. 
  • Will need to be IRS-certified and pass the Advanced IRS test (open book exam at the training provided by United Way) and attend site orientation in January (details TBD).
  • No experience necessary! This is a great way to jump into the tax program and help return more money to the pockets of taxpayers with low income.
